Summary: There's a certain fun in just being awfully, horribly two-faced.

There's a certain fun in just being awfully, horribly two-faced. No, scratch that: multi-faced, a living hydra. Take off one mask and two shall appear in its place, a conundrum that makes Madara wonder where bone starts and where porcelain ends. Not that he'd even care to know, really, the glue between layers so strong nothing can possibly dissolve it. Some of it is blood. Madara doesn't want to touch those.

Masks are good and fun to wear; they keep him stable and sane. It's easier to hide under them than to confront the issues he has. It's easier to put on a show, to pretend to have this grand personality and big smile and be a mother to everyone than to do what he really wants, which is curl up in bed and not get up until the world dissolves like an uncoated pill in water.

Maybe if God (Kanata. Kanata is not God but Madara has the right to resent him for giving him hope, and what else is the job of a God but to be resented? What is the job of a God, if not to hear prayers and to attend them, and if someone can't even answer a mere prayer, is he God at all? Maybe there's a reason they had excommunicated Madara) had answered his prayers, things would've been different. Maybe if He had done so, Madara could touch his own face and feel skin, not the coldness of a mask. Maybe he'd be surrounded by something else than the smell of dried blood and slowly drying glue.

How does Wataru do it? Madara knows Wataru has masks, too - as many if not more than Madara -, but he keeps them carefully in his sleeves, changing them as easy as one snaps his fingers. He doesn't need the glue: instead he chose the molting process in reverse, each molt revealing a new self that isn't, in reality, his actual personality, adding protective skins until he was wrapped in a cocoon of safety, an exoskeleton that hid Wataru from the world.

It's interesting to see the difference between the two, when they stand side by side - rare as that is -, Wataru doing his reverse molting with every step he takes and Madara frantically gluing masks to his face, an arms race to see which of them can be the least truthful to one another.

Maybe that's what makes the affair fun. There's no official name to it - he knows some others do little units when they're dating and then break up the unit when they break up. It's a ridiculous process -, and neither of them are in a hurry to put a name to what goes on between them. After all - to put a name to it would be to take off all the layers between the two, to unglue the masks and to actually molt, and that's no fun at all.
